Why?
"Sen. Gordon Smith, an Oregon Republican, questioned why VeriSign should have what critics have called a guaranteed perpetual income stream from .com domain registrations."

Why should Sen. Smith have a guaranteed government pension? For that matter, why are there any number of government handout programs? People should work and take individual responsibility. As for Verisign...it has that because we've deemed that it should be somewhat centralized in order to have a degree of efficiency. Kinda like the utilities - you don't want 3 or 4 cable lines running through your yard. Make 'em share the one. Maybe Verisign shouldn't run it. Maybe the U.S. government should retain control, and use the proceeds to defray our tax bills. Wouldn't that be nice for a change.
