Windows
Hi, DevGuy_z.

The reason is that WordPerfect didn't have a Windows version once Windows 3.0/1 was released.

My understanding of the delay is that the WordPerfect folks didn't have the access to the API that they needed.

They stuck with text based 5.1 way too long. When they scrambled to get a windows version (6.0) out it was inferior because they didn't have the time to make it really good.

Actually, there was a 5.1 version for Windows that was released in '91. The Windows versions didn't start with 6.0. There were conflicts that were created between Windows and WordPerfect's keyboard commands (e.g., Alt-F4) and other things that could have been resolved with equal access to the code. Word had a major advantage in that respect.

I will concede, though, that one of the things that sounded the death knell for WordPerfect for Windows (to the extent that it's now a shell of its former self in the marketplace) is that the main draw of WP for users was the keyboard commands that were quick and easy if you knew them. Transitioning to Windows made that advantage take a hit. Plus, there wasn't enough difference between Word and WP to justify purchasing WP separately, when people were getting their PCs with Office pre-installed.

Interestingly enough, my current laptop didn't come with Office. Instead, it came with a cheesy trial version of office. The horror....!!
