Analisis correct
The operating system for Windows 3 was still DOS. Microsoft was fond of saying that Windows was not DOS and this technically was correct because Windows was both DOS and a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and other software. Today Microsoft is careful to say it sells Operating System PRODUCTS. the last word PRODUCT being important because there was absolutely no technical reason whatso ever for a developer to use the GUI when the native DOS product might work better and could be made graphical interfacing itself. OS/2, a Microsoft product was also an OS and GUI but the GUI was not integrated into the operating system.

The strategy of marrying the two was a strategy of wrong doing.

I remember oh so well a discussion with a bank manager regarding the launch of an HP palmtop product I was involved with. The banker said OK on the loan but the next software developed should be on Windows. This indecates that there was a wide spread conspiracing involving the financial community that enabled Microsoft to prevail.

WordPerfect from the start was XML based in the sense that XML is a subset of SGML. This is the reason that all versions of WordPerfect could read WordPerfect generated files regardless of the introduction of a new edition. Old versions may not display perfectly the document but there was no requirement to upgrade on a time cycle set by the vendor and in fact many people uses the WordPerfect DOS version for years and years some still claiming it was the best WordPerfect ever produced.
