Microsoft will support Linux; all software compatable
Regardless of Bravo Sierra Police, Microsoft Longhorn will be supporting Linux. We have already seen ZDnet say this through reports involving a virtualization strategy and key man employment. Microsoft is reportably on board with this strategy in Longhorn which is to be released by the end of this year.

Longhorn allows Novell Server (SUSE Linux) to be run as a virtual image. Virtual images of Linux desktops and Windows XP will also be runnable on Longhorn meaning that you can provide your own gotomyPC capability. A similar strategy for mobile computing. The security of virtual machines. Oracle inside virtual linux. DB2 inside virtual Linux.

Virtually all application software becomes Microsoft compatable.

I don't see any alternate strategy. Within a year all of us will be doing something similar.

Those who can not see their way to supporting anything from Microsoft just will not be using Longhorn and just will be missing out on applications that can only run on Windows. Hell, come on, there must be something Microsoft branded that is good. Microsoft Project perhaps.

Why not put a virtualized windows XP desktop on your SUSE Linux box using VMware. Seriously. Microsoft is bending because we in the IT industry are making it do so. If we turn Microsoft into a friend do we not have one less enemy?

But the preasure must never stop. A squirel in the attic is anoyance enough to climb up on the roof and see what is going on. Over 30 standardization groups and open source is going on. Those OS/2 boys at Citrix are going on. Huzzah. The Church of the Future of Software design is now closed.
