Two Possibilities
Source code needs to be studied, interpreted and understood. So it is going to take some explaining on the part of Firefox, Moxilla et all.

With the study and explaination, M$ gains knowledge of their competitor and possibly the direction and future features.

The developer on developer discussion gains Microsoft a personal relationship with very valuable programming talent. Talent that "could be" swayed to join the empire. Overtime, it could be these interface people become less agitant by knowing thy "enemy".

The theory that MS legal is looking for a poster child is a distinct possibility. Would we as a community not all be better off with a better technical interface with MS for all of us???? More resources put into MS prepared code examples for common problems. MS could help raise the entire community rather than the few elite......
