Consequences of not doing this

A company must defend the usage of a trademark or lose its ownership. History is littered with examples of companies who lost a trademark because it became a generic term. Google? doesn't want to become the next escalator, mimeograh, or cola. Google has joined the fraternity already occupied by XEROX?, Spam?, Band-Aid?, and more.
