Some stats better than others
A pirated Content that someone buys is an acutal loss. You might not be able to get exact of how many items are sold but you can make very good estimates based on arrests and investigation information. This however is not true of online piracy. Seeing as the downloader pays nothing for the content so there is no guarantee they'd actually pay for the content if they couldn't get it for free. So any numbers for losses due to P2P are bogus at best. They literally mean nothing. The number for pirated content sold in black markets everywhere is probably not accurate and quite possibly an underestimation.

But this isn't the point. My point is there are real world losses occuring from criminals selling pirated content. Money that should be going to the copyright holders is being redirected to criminal organizations. P2P could cause indirect losses. The person using P2P could negatively impact the potential sales of conent by finding out how crappy said content is. They could decided that they don't want to buy the content and are happy with the download. These are indirect losses. This is not money you'd get if you stopped the problem. In the case of pirates selling on the black market, it you stop that problem the money is then flowing into the content providers pocket again.

So here you go. You have too issues. One is costing you money. You can plainly see it is costing you money. Say like broken window in winter. Heat is just sucking out the window and it's costing you. That's a real world cost. On the other hand you think you house value is being decreased because your neighbor won't trim his tree the way you like and it over hangs on your property. So you fight him to get the tree removed. Now fix one and only one and see which one actually puts money in your pocket. That's kind of what the music industry see as a dilema. Potential property value increases could lead to money in you pocket if some likes the tree gone and you want to sell. Fixing the windows put money directly in your pocket on weekly basis and increases your property value. So which would you focus on first? The windows or that pesky tree?
