A Martian Argument
What would you think of someone who argued that all Martians had to be deported to Mars if they didn't have a valid green card (grin)? To me, the argument wouldn't be valid unless you first had a definite Martian in custody to deport.

Movielink currently allows movie downloads to be rented for 24 hours - or downloaded to keep, but only viewable on a computer. The only thing I see changing here is the addition of a "license" to burn the downloaded movie to a DVD.

Hands up - all those who have burned a 2-hour movie to a DVD when the filesize was only 650 megs - the current filesizes of 2-hour films on Movielink? Hmm. Didn't see too many hands go up. And, there's a good reason for that.

Professionally burned DVDs are usually dual-layer DVDs that constitute about 9 gigs of data. And quality-wise, DVDs marketed in single-layer format are pushing the quality limits at 4.3 gigs. What quality would then be available at 650 megs???

Before we start arguing about whether movies can be downloaded and burned, I'd like to see a scenario where:

(A) The movie to be burned is of the same quality level as the movie I'd buy on DVD (and at the same price or less).

(B) The movie to be burned could be downloaded in less real-time than it takes to watch it.

(C) I could download and burn all the movies I wanted without getting a nasty email from my ISP about overuse of bandwidth.

Since I don't see any of those three things happening in the immediate future, it makes it seem silly to be arguing over the issue of downloaded movies ... just as silly as arguing that Martians should be deported to Mars.
