---The second that people think Google is omiting sites or changing rankings for it's own benefit, I would suspect everyone would desert in like a sinking ship---

Google has always done this, and so far, no one is bailing. Google dropped one of the BMW sites because of blatant attempts by BMW to rig the results. Google will often drop sites that people find offensive or sites that are offering illegal items. All of these are "omitting sites or changing rankings for its own benefit."
