Trillian doesn't go far enough
I use Trillian at work. It's fine for text, but it doesn't support voice, video, or file transfer, even MSN-to-MSN or AIM-to-AIM. And you need a Yahoo account to talk with someone using Yahoo Messenger. Not everyone has or wants an account with each IM service. With the MSN and Yahoo bridge, they won't have to.
