There's the rub

This is a key point to music/movie downloads being a success over the long haul. The big benefit to the content companies is that you massively cut costs, no manufacturing, no distribution. However, they have to realize that what they're selling is an inferior product. Lower quality, no extra features, no packaging, and of course DRM limitations that make it much, much less useful.

I want to see some compromise here--since it costs you less to make and it's inferior, sell it for a lower price. DRM would not be anywhere near as distasteful if there were some payback--buy a locked-down, limited version of a song/movie and pay 1/2 or 1/3 what you pay for the unlocked version. If p2p is really cutting into profits so much, then this would make sense for everyone. Otherwise the whole thing comes off as a greedy money grabbing exercise.
