I don't agree
---Apple said that if interoperability were required then people
would be copying music illegally and the law would actually
encourage piracy---

People are already copying music illegally. And people are already copying DRM'ed music and distributing it illegally. And this happens on a massive scale compared to the puny level of actual music download sales. How could this law make things any worse than they already are? How would being able to play an iTunes song on a Creative player, or a WMA file on an iPod cause increased piracy?

---Additionally, it would reduce competition in
the the DRM business because everyone would use only one
kind---

Again, this is already happening. Apple owns the music download market, so essentially, there's only one kind of DRM in use. And honestly, I think just the opposite would happen. Right now, everyone has to use FairPlay because everyone owns an iPod. If you open the iPod up to other forms of DRM, then you get a fair playing field, and lots of innovation can occur.

---Finally, France's law would reward mediocrity and destroy
the incentive for product innovation and excellence---

So you're saying that given a level playing field, and a fair market, that people would stop buying iPods and stop buying songs from Apple? That Apple can't compete without their already built-in advantages of consumer lock-in? I disagree. In a fair market, the best product will win out. That's real competition. Why is Apple afraid of it in this market, yet so in favor of it in the OS market?
