Replication / Mirroring
Any good business, including archives, would utilize replication that utilizes offsite storage - possibly mirroring. The problem in both your example and the Library of Alexandria is the concentration in one location. With mass storage getting cheaper all the time, it would be more logical to spread it across the globe and synchronize with each addition (not possible with the Library at the time, of course). Then if a natural disaster or terrorist hits one location, all of the mirrored/synchronized sites would still be intact. As the other poster mentioned, the source content would also still be available. Digitizing just makes it more convenient to access.
