I don't know about the US
But here in Canada you have drive to a National park and drive quite a ways for many of them. Gas prices alone make frequent trips to National park not feasable. It costs too much to drive there. Then add the cost of park pass on top of that and a day trip picnic to a National park costs more than taking the Family to an NHL hockey game.
