Pay for content is something introduced to journalism by Abramoff's Preston Gates and Ellis, the Gates family law and lobby firm and the firm headed by Bill Neukom whoes roll in destroying Netscape was paramont owing to his heading the Microsoft legal team.
Of course Neukom/Abramoff and associates would not allow the bloggers to admit they were paid to astroturf. Astroturfing is the orchestrating of what appears to be grass roots interest by artifical means, such as paying folks to support Microsoft with comments on newsgroups and blogs to denegrade the Netscape browser so that its loss of market share could plausably be explained by quaility issues rather than the illegal use of monopoly power.
The wrong in this is that the ethic of best defense even for a criminal apples only to criminal persons and not to criminal organizations such as Microsoft. If Neukom's broadened ethic is to become the norm, nothing helps as much as his election to the American Bar Association slated for August of this year.
Rather than be shocked, Netscape.com goes on the offensive against the man most responsible for desparaging its founders and products by adopting this ethic.
I see problems with all "anchors" who advocate positions they personally do not believe. This is a role reserved for the legal profession and only for the purpose of giving criminal persons (not organizations) the best legal defense possible. Even so, when asked anchors should be prepared to esplain how they personally benefit or may benefit from taking on a position.
The errosion of journalistic ethics is directly related to William Neukom's application of the American Bar Association's ethics that all criminal persons deserve the best possible defense including defense in the court of public oppinion. Hence he turned law firms into lobby firms that have worked much harm on polite society.
On a positive note. Netscape.com was created at least in part to showcase the superior Novell Directory Services. This LDAP supporting technology means than, unlike microsoft's technology, human beings can actually manage large networks.
