The platform means nothing
Take a look at what the Republicans and Democrats actually do, dude. Don't you know the difference between political rhtoric and the truth?

Government involvement in our lives has mostly only increased where it isn't justified (like warrantless searches, even though there are mechanisms for a secret court and rapid response to an immediate need) and decreased where it is (such as inspections of food processing plants). Note that much of that has happened under a Republican President and Concress. The Democrats aren't much better.

Just because it was a showdown between large corporate entities, doesn't mean that the positions don't have consequences for individuals. Shift enough of the bandwidth to the wealthy and powerful and the populace is starved for access to the smaller sites. Do you really believe that the communications companies wouldn't do that in a heartbeat if they thought that it would improve their bottom line? And don't you think that at least some of the corporations and politicians are uncomfortable with things like blogs that allow information to be disseminated rapidly ? even when it might be embarrassing to them? Look at Russinovich and the Sony rootkit fiasco. By the way Sony behaved in the aftermath ("what they don't know won't hurt them"), it seems pretty obvious that they would have loved to have a way to shut him up or at least slow him down. Conspiracy theory? I hope so, but I'm not counting out the possibility.

Look at the changes in recent years and you'll see that many (if not almost all) ultimately benefit the government and big business, whether or not it's at the expense of the average Joe. The best government money can buy, if you have the cash...
