You make some good points
You make a good point. Profit is not always the main motivator. Sometimes is an ideal or legacy that someone want to leave. Sometimes it's altruistic but that I've found is rare. Open source for me is interesting. Sometimes I right a utilities and I have no interest in selling them and I doubt people would pay for them, some might be not enough to make a real profit. So I give it out for free to those who want it and I could use the GPL, sometimes I do. My motivator for doing it is to see if I can do it.

Hardware wise my motivation to doing decrease directly in proprotion to the money it cost to do it. I'd like at least enough profit to cover my costs and if possible pay me a living wage so I could quit my day job. That's a motivation combining the two, profit and curiosity.

My fear with net neutrality is this. First I think it will cause my internet cost to go up when the cost of advanced infrastructure that only the big corporations need are passed to everyone. So Google pays an extra $10 a month and so do I. I don't like the idea of that. Next I fear that adoption of new technologies will hindered because the internet providers don't want shake everyone down to pay for. But then there is Google sitting there with hoards of cash but is only pay $10 extra but they want this. Will Google donate the money or invest? Maybe but will the the Telco or cable company accept the terms. Now with out Net Neutrality you'd have some Telco investing on thier own and going to corporations like Google with something of value for price, a price out of the range of use mere mortals but affordable to a big corporation who then uses it offer us something valuable for a reasonable price. Third fear I have is government innvolvement and that's always scary when a beaurocracy applies red tape to everything.

I'm not anti-socialist. I live in Canada and where have extremes of capitolism and socialism. In some case socialism works like health care and other it doesn't like the wheat board. Capitolism works great too in some case like electrical generation but fail with electrical distribution.

So I think there is merit in Net Neutrality, its not a bad idea but I think pros don't out wiegh the cons.
