Speaking as an editor with a publishing house, Google Books sends a steady stream of customers to our catalog site through their "buy the book" function. Certainly enough to outweigh any freeloaders.

Again, the point here is that Google is not making the entire book available online (unless the copyright holder grants them permission to do so). If this is illegal, than so is regular Google, as websites are just as copyrighted as books, which means that they, Yahoo, MSN, AskJeeves, etc, are all breaking the law.
