Residuals

While the studios (whether movie or music) take the lion's share of the purchase price of CD or DVD, the screenwriters, scriptwriters, playwriters, etc do get a fair bundle too), the music writer's only get 8 cents per CD sold, song performed live, etc. This is called mechanical residuals.

It is in the residuals that the artists make any money from their hard work. Yes, hard work! I challenge anyone to write, and especially compose a full score of music - and not tell me that it is not hard work.

From a piracy aspect...nothing in film offered for download is of high quality. I prefer to actually buy the DVD. The same pretty much goes for music, as most mp3's only provide a rough sample of a song. On a purchased CD the music is much finer in quality. Most people that I know who do download pirated mp3's do end up buying the full CD later on...thus no sales are lost.

Software piracy (might as well hit that too) is mostly a myth in regard to lost sales. The vast majority of those who download free pirated either could never afford it in the first place, or if they can they will end up buying a legit copy after an extended evaluation period. Let's face it, most software isn't worth the price when first released (too many bugs due to too early release).

When it comes to being able to use software, the information society and economy require access to some very expensive software...and there are those who cannot get or keep a particular job without it. Some see software pirates who offer the stuff for free as "Robinhood".

The bottom line is that music authors and software authors both work very hard to provide us with the things that either make life more enjoyable or more productive. The lost profits claimed by the music, movie and software industry are just the figment of a bean counter's imagination and bear no relation to reality.
