The issue is whether bandwidth hog services should pay more for the extra capacity they use; as you say, "Pay for a pipe of a certain speed."


I don't understand this "bandwidth hog" thing. Obviously you're using it as a pejorative, but could you elaborate what it is and why it's bad?

A couple of years ago the cable companies used the same loaded phrase to describe some of their own users. I don't remember what their agenda was but clearly labeling someone a "hog" was key to their efforts to pursuade.

It didn't make any more sense to me than it does now. Everyone connected to the net, whether it be Google or you, pay an ISP for a certain amount of bandwidth. How can using what you pay for be considered hoggish?

The only hogs are the telcos.


Once you've said that, you've opposed the attempt by Google, Microsoft, et al to pass their business costs onto all customers, including those who don't use their services.

Then what would make you most happy would be metered internet use for everyone. That would be the most fair, wouldn't it? Why should Miscrosoft and Google pay for the telco's networks? They're not even customers.

I wonder why the telcos don't propose the most fair solution, meters for everyone? Seems like the telcos know something about how much their customers are willing to pay and they are trying to shift the costs onto the content providers.
