Sigh indeed
Knock it off.
As a parent I can see the need for stricter guidlines and/or laws. I think the labeling system is good idea but I also think it may not get past the idea stage and off the ground because of the vast number of webisites that are out there. And more websites pop up every day.
I like the idea of the whole safesearch tool for the search engines. That is very similar to parental control through an ISP though. And if a parental control works like it is supposed to then your kids can't view anything that you may not want them to. Now I do understand that somehow, sometimes they will get through to sites that they should not be viewing. Perhaps that is where Google should take more of a responsibility. OR not make them sponsored sites. I know I certainly do not want to use a search engine that sponsors sites that depict child pornography. There should be better regulations for the regular pornographic sites as well. As well as what search term can come up. We all know that when you search for something on a search engine that it usually comes up with about a gazillion results. I tend to not go past the first page or two myself so maybe they could put the 'suggestive' sites at the very back of the results where they are less viewable?
There are a lot of things that can be done but we are going to continually get nowhere with it when people are not willing to reach any sort of compromise.
We are also tending to lean a little too much on the giverment to do our parenting for us BUT we also need stiffer policies in place for those times that we can't be standing over their shoulders. For those times when we can't be 100% sure of what they are doing. I can't be at school with my kids, I stay in contact with the parents of their friends, I know the policies of the local libraries, and that kind of thing but there is only so much that I can do. That is where these policies come in. The lawsuit with Google may be a migth frivilous BUT it may at least get people off of their duff's and make them actually listen to each oter.
