An IP address only represents the physical device that its bound to. These days, more often than not, that is a $50 wireless router which has been set up with no security so that anyone within 300 feet can gain access to it.

What kind of implications for privacy are there when you're visited by a group of FBI agents in the middle of the night who have obtained a no-knock warrant based on the data downloaded by someone at the house or apartment NEXT DOOR to yours (or sitting in a car outside your house) via your assigned IP address?

Sure, people ought to lock down their routers, but few do. Everywhere I go I find a wireless SSID named 'linksys' or 'netgear' that still has the default password set up for the administration page, and has NO security set up whatsoever to access it.

I suppose that will soon be a crime too, given the current legislation being suggested. Who is liable then? The ISP? The user? The manufacturer of the device? The whole idea is ludicrous.
