- Tell me you aren't really that naive...

...because you appear to have no idea what you are talking about.
Quote: " see no problem with ISPs keeping the ID-to-IP# correlation of users, as long as accessibility is via a court order or warrant."
You've never worked at an ISP, have you? I have worked in two, both rather small. The log files necessary to correllate an IP address to a user name take up a *lot* of space over a period of time. This bill would require ISP's to store these log files as long as someone is a customer. I've been a customer of my ISP for almost ten years now, and expect to remain a customer of this ISP for quite a while to come. I agree that the government *should* be allowed to exercise due process of law (that's critical! If there is no warrant or subpoena, then it's illegal) and request subscriber info. I have honored such requests many times while working for an ISP. However, there should be a limitation on how long those records must be maintained.
Quote: "It's the government's *responsibility* to protect us and our children from the creeps who are using the net to victimize people."
Uhhhh....no, actually it isn't. It is *our* responsibility to protect us and our children. The courts have said many times over that the police departments (and by extension, the FBI, etc.) are not responsible for protecting us. Their job is to arrest a perpetrator *after* a crime has been committed. Of course, by then, it's too late...you're already a victim.
Quote: "Not only that, but your assertion that "we'll all end up serving time" is blatantly ridiculous - the government has no interest in that, they need a base of honest, working citizen taxpayers, not a majority who are in prison."
Again, history disagrees. Do you remember your history lessons about WWII Germany? How about Stalinist U.S.S.R.? Does the name "Tiananmen Square" ring a bell? The Spanish Inquisition? History is full of examples where governments have sought to repress free speech and open exchange of ideas. Unfortunately, our current government in the U.S. seems to be doing everything it can to lead us that direction, despite the Bill of Rights. I'd rather not hide my head in the sand until it's too late, and then wonder "WTF happened???" - Posted by: T38 Posted on: 05/05/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
