MS tied IE and WMP to its OS.
Apple ties the iTunes format to its hardware.

No, Apple is one of many online music services, they aren't locking you into anything. iTunes will only work on an iPod, however ANY online music store tunes will work on an iPod, or you can rip your own CDs and they will work on iPods, in other words you DO NOT have to use iTunes if you have an iPod. You aren't stuck with having to use iTunes at all.

They also are nowhere near a monopoly, and have not been convicted for illegally leveraging the market (like some other company has been..wink, wink). And I believe that you can remove iTunes from your computer, you can't (without more expense) remove IE or WMP, and both will keep trying to "take over" as the default. And don't try to tell me to go to the "Add/Remove programs because I have tried and it WILL NOT remove.

If you can't see the huge difference in the two companies, and their behaviours, then you aren't really paying attention.
