Good News?
Eric Goldman thinks that "...this case is good news for search engine advertisers (and, as a result, search engines)..." but I'm not so sure it is such 'good news' for search engine users. The artificial manipulation of search results based on pre-arranged advertising (SEARCH SPAM) so reduces the usefulness of search engines. No longer can I count on relevant hits coming to the top of my search list..instead I get spoofed URLs (which use my search phrase as the name) but have nothing to do with what I was looking for.
If I search Google for "1978 MGB rocker panel" I will be amazed to find www.1978_MGB_rocker_panel.com come up in my search results. Unfortunately the site will have nothing to do with what I was interested in but will be advertising links.
"Search SPAM" is a scourge that renders Internet search engines useless and, knowing that there are malicious websites that only require you to visit the site to case you trouble, the spoofing of URLs in search results to trick people into visiting those sites is an added risk to the user. The whole practice of allowing 'keywords' to manipulate search results should be stopped.
