- Vexcel does more than just build one sensor
-
As a current customer of Vexcel, this is not just a simple MS snatch and grab move. Vexcel has several businesses which don't fit MS and is not just another start-up being swallowed up. I doubt they are going to disappear, rather MS is investing in technology. And I am glad they are.
First, a little bit of Vexcel. They have several core compentcies, photogrammetric scanners, aerial cameras, etc., synthic aperature Radar processing, satellite terminal ground stations, and technology which spans these areas. I am in this field and know of no other company which spans these areas. They also have a strong customer base, both federal and overseas companies and have no need for the buyout. Over half of their employees have PHD's. This company is on the leading edge of high level of technology which is produced affordably.
Now, let's look at the playing field. In the photogrammetric region, two companies dominate the field, Leica and Zeiss. Just by pure presence, these guys deliver on their schedule, not necessarily the customer's. No other companies can afford to directly compete against them -- its too costly and they would have no customer base to carry the development. I'm glad to have some money tossed to a competitor of them.
In the GIS field, MS is a low level player. Google and ESRI are most notable players. Again, the competition will drive these companies to be more responsive to the consumer. I know some people would say that Google Earth is very responsive, but I would disagree. Even on the basic level, they don't provide simple details. For example, the date of the photography being viewed.
I think its great that MS is finally throwing around some bucks because of competition. Ultimately, it will benefit everyone. The Vexcel employees I know are very excited about this move. They feel it is the best opportunity for the company to develop to the next level. And as a consumer of their products, I think it is a great opportunity for all of us to benefit from the MS cash cow.
And its going to be a great ride -- a lot of people and companies will be trying to figure out this move. Its either could be brilliant or another costly move by MS.
