Filtering products already work
There are a number of Internet filtering products in the marketplace for parents to use such as Bsafe and CyberSitter that do a good job filtering whatever content a parent wants to filter. They allow parents to be fairly specific as to what is filtered (such as violence and IMs). This stuff is good when a child is young; however, at some point before a child is a teenager, parents need to own up to their parental duty of teaching what they feel is right and wrong about violence and sex. They also should make their children aware of not exposing personal information on the web in blogs, IMs with strangers and email. Remember, children tend to be a few steps of their parents in computer ability. At a certain age they can reinstall an OS on their own and then change any preset defaults.
We live in an era where computer access is fairly easy in many parts of the world. Some parents would prefer to go back to the dark ages, put chastity belts on their daughters and not let their kids go out of the house, but this isn't going to happen. Parents do need to spend a little time to understand the issues with letting their children on the Internet and actively teach their children. The gov't isn't a parent nor do I want them to try. I certainly don't want Bush and Congress to act like a parent to my children, I want my children to have integrity.
