Google are their own worth enemy
It's just a symptom, I notice quite a few things like this, for example, Google Video Player EULA:

"2. PRIVACY POLICY
Protecting users' privacy is very important to Google. As a condition of downloading and using the Software, you agree to the terms of the Google Video Player Privacy Policy at http://video.google.com/playerprivacypolicy.html, which may be updated from time to time and without notice. "

I agree to accept terms which may be changed without notice? WTF!

They live in a fanboy bubble and it gives them a distorted sense of reality. So nobody says "hold on a minute, thats not a good idea", and they only get the negative feedback when its too late.
Once the products are out, the competitors attacks and Google defends and it all becomes about corporate face saving then.
