This is stupid
Google, as a business, has a responsibility to the people that use it. True. It also clearly states in its own terms of use that it may hand over information where required by law. (Don't make me break out the terms of use because I will) While I will agree that some of this may be fishing but I do not think that all of it is just fishing. There is actually a valid point to all of this. It is supposed to be about protecting children. Against things that they should not have access to on the internet. It shouldn't be about taking the rightful access by an adult away but about making sure that sites do not provide easy access to minors. And that they have stringent age verification processes. THAT is what it should be about. You can blahblahblah on about parental control and how this is a violation of civil liberties or something like that but the fact remains that because people and/or businesses are not practicing good responsibility themselves this is needed. It is impractical to expect that they will all practice it. I'm sure some will change but not all will. That being said something needs to be done. I don't think that such a hissy fit needs to be raised about this. The fact that Google is fighting it has a lot of people saying "Good for you Google! You fight the man!" but to play devil's advocate here for aminte has anyone ever thought that they are so deadset against this not because they are interested in "protecting" us but because they have so much more information than they are letting on and they are afraid that they might get caught? That they might actually be covering their own assets because they actually have something to hide and that there is actually something in this information that the goverment might get that could incriminate Google? Just a thought
