The biggest reason...
to much of a hassle to protect the PC while on the internet. Keep in mind the average Joe and Jane just want to log in and go. They do not want to deal with defrag, AV, AS or any other maintenance.

Another thing I hear is I have to use it at work 8-12 hours a day, last thing I want is to use it at home. Also many people will do thier online stuff at work and be done with it. I saw it when I worked in a major corporation. And still see it in my SMB clients.

But with all the security problems that have surrounded Microsoft and the internet, people are basically saying "F" that! Don't need it that bad. Microsoft has a HUGE uphill battle to try and win consumer confidence back. Meanwhile the Mac will continue to grow as will Linux, although not near as fast as it could.
