OS X widgets, Yahoo (Konfabulator) widgets, now Opera widgets?
I now count three separate and likely mutually-incompatible widget formats (two if you're stuck on Windows). Add Mozilla XUL and Microsoft XAML-based applications to the mix, and Microsoft's old Active Desktop items (remember those?), and you now have four software vendors each creating their own notion of desktop applications built on "open" web standards. These standards IMHO were created to avoid this very situation as the web becomes balkanized -- again -- into browser-specific technologies. (And don't get me started on Adobe/Macromedia Flash!)
