Maybe, but I have doubts...
Here's why: the market is already saturated. The only real improvement is that its possible to get the content without leaving home. But then again...there's Netflix for that. I truly believe the bottom line is that people only have so much time, and can only watch so much content. Are they going to concentrate on the arcane stuff that didn't get great reviews? or the stuff that really hits the market big, because it was done better? Clearly there will be niches, where people have special interests - this will be handy for those...but for general consumer fare, most people will stick to the mainstream outlets - and those items will probably not be available on google's service.

IMHO, this is another case of the classic mistake of a company not sticking to its core competency (i.e. search). This usually doesn't work out to well for the company that does it. Occasionally diversification works, but in this case there are already too many powerful players in the media biz who aren't going to allow it.

In general, Google could be on the verge of fighting battles on too many fronts...which doesn't bode well for any of them due to lack of focus. It will be telling to see what its earnings report shows on Jan. 31. We'll see what investor reaction is to this service before then...and then we'll see what the reaction is come then.
