Well, I don't know. I don't think that iTunes GUI is all that bad. It seems alright from when I used it out before (and occassionally use it at work). I don't like it as much as WMP, but I'm pretty sure that that's just cuz I'm used to WMP.
Though, one of the big things for me that pretty much killed iTunes for me (even though I have an iPod) is that (back when I tried it at version 5.something) there was no way I could find to have iTunes monitor a folder and automatically add songs to the music library when the actual files were put in that folder. I don't know. Maybe it was there and I couldn't find it (which is still not a good sign -- unintuitive), but believe me I tried. I mean, even Creative's media player software that comes with Sound Blasters has that functionality. This feature in WMP, coupled with the "sort music files into folders based on the ID3 tags" functionality (which iTunes does have, I know), kept my music folder nice and clean automatically and was just too convenient to give up for me. Has iTunes 6 fixed this unfortunate oversight?
Oh, and WMP's handling of Album Art is better (as in the art is linked to the album and not the individual songs..it's just more convenient in my opinion) and the retrieval and updating of ID3 tag information from internet databases is much, much better (in that it exists at all). Again, I haven't really used iTunes 6, so these might have been improved.
Because of the lack of these deficiencies (the folder monitoring being the main thing), I had to look for and find XPlay, which allows me to sync my iPod with WMP (I don't even have to have iTunes waste space on my HDD anymore).
Please keep in mind that I'm not saying that these are all problems that everyone should have with iTunes. I'm just saying that they were problems for ME when using iTunes, so please don't respond with stuff like "who needs to monitor folders anyway" or "it makes more sense to have the album art associated with the individual songs" etc etc. If I'm wrong about the actual specifics of a feature ("do the album art things actually work the way that I think they do?" or "IS there a way to retrieve ID3 info for an mp3 from an internet database in iTunes?" etc) or if a feature HAS been improved/implemented/whatever in iTunes 6, I would be glad to know, however. - Posted by: mastercko Posted on: 12/23/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
