I don't think that you actually understand what he's saying...
first off, the original complaint wasn't about how iTunes doesn't fit YOUR style of playing music, it's that it didn't fit HIS (or HERS, but I'll assume male for the purposes of this).

I also don't think that you don't get what he's talking about with the "DEFAULT PLAYLIST." I think that as a user of iTunes, maybe you don't get it (because as far as I remember, iTunes DOESN'T have a DEFAULT PLAYLIST). I have to put it in terms of WMP. The default playlist there (which is called "Now Playing") is it's own entity that always exists. Think of it like this. The playlists that exist on your harddrive (either normal playlists or smart playlists) are basically just that. Lists of what to play. But when you choose to play them or any media for that matter, they get added to the "Now Playing" list (which might or might not get cleared before this adding takes place), which is what WMP looks to to decide what it's ACTUALLY going to play. ALL THE TIME. It's a LITTLE different from that, but I simplified it for the argument.

In short, in WMP, thanks to the Now Playing playlist that always exists, you can always just select songs in your media library in whatever way you want, and say "Play these songs" or "Add to what's Playing" and the songs will just get put on the Now Playing playlist (that ALWAYS EXISTS) and they will be played. In iTunes, to do that, you have to specifically create a list, or new entity, just to play whatever songs strike you in the moment. It's this functionality as a sort of musical scratchpad (afforded by a default playlist) that iTunes is lacking that the original poster was complaining about, I believe.

Though, now that I think about it, the Party Mix _might_ serve this functionality as well...*shrug* Anyone more familiar with iTunes want to comment?
