Say what?

I don't think you've ever tried iTunes. Your criticisms are pretty much 100% off base.

I'm yet to encounter someone (ok,you're the first) who had any trouble using iTunes.

I don't know what's so hard about clicking on a song to play it right out of the library.

In fact, most of the time I don't use a playlist at all and just listen to the entire library. (Although by definition, the library is the DEFAULT PLAYLIST.)

I just click on the shuffle button to play them in random order and I'm good to go.

Pretty complicated - not

What does it take to create a playlist if I want to listen to a bunch of songs?

Select the ones I want and click create playlist from selection. Wow, so difficult.

This is comparable to just about any player out there, if you want to listen to a subset of the songs in your collection. No matter who's player you're using, you have to indicate which ones you want to listen to. (By definition, I'd say that selection is a playlist - independant of the player used.)

I think you need to actually use iTunes.
