Critical systems should not be hosted
As far as I'm concerned, business critical systems have no place being on the intenet. At least, not until a greater level of reliability can be guaranteed. And let's face it, that's a long way off.

I understand the points about small businesses having little choice, but we seem to have skipped a step. Server based systems can have almost all the benefits of an internet application with very few of the risks. Yes, you need to get a server installed and maintained, but the cost is a tiny percentage of the total CRM expenditure and the control benefit is massive.

There are a few reliable server based systems coming out now with all the redundancy required to keep it running. And with a local network, the problems of the internet connection going down can be restricted to field staff.

I heard of one called Rhyacs (www.rhgsystems.com), seems to be good.
