Cause and effect
"Spam is leveling off"

I don't know what they are using for measurements but mine, if anything, has gotten worse. But let us grant them that this might be true. The question then becomes: how do you prove cause and effect? You think a US law will stop spammers outside the US? You think US spammers give a damn about some regulation? Do you think spammers "play by the rules"?

That last question is the telling one: the administrative/legal mindset thinks you can put regulations into place any everyone will follow. News flash folks: spammers don't care. Pass one law or pass a hundred: they will find a way to do what they want to do.

You want to fix spam? Try fixing the technology. Maybe IPv6 will help; maybe a better mail protocol (there was some talk about that, don't know that it ever got anywhere); maybe a better OS that doesn't allow spammers, trojans, keyloggers and viruses to just waltz right in unimpeded.

It's the technology that got us into this mess. It was done at a time when "trust" was the order of the day. That time has past and the simple interfaces have been abused. You want to fix spam? Fix the technology that allows it.

Let the suits go off to some meeting and pass regulations to bother somebody else. Our legislators' time could be better spent on more useful persuits.
