not everything should be worked up in Excell
The life cycle of an Excell spread sheet ends when the developer leaves the company. This is the kind of development that makes Microsoft software a consumable rather than the foundation, the core functionality, upon which a business or government is based.

I agree with most of the article you provided. Certainly PHP is something that someone with a standard order taking need should use. In fact, a service like Fuzzy Monkey can be subscribed to to provide that kind of thing and all you really need to know is PHP and HTML. I think Fuzzy costs less than 10 bucks a month. But just like Excell, not every thing should be worked up that way.

My fear with Microsoft tools is that unlike Sun, IBM, and almost everyone else, Micorosoft perpetuates the notion that Excell spread sheet like development is ok. It is not.

The life of the code should be at least as long as the life of the business or governement, and longer. That puts into play the notion of industry standards which is why Java is so exciting. And the notion of professionals who know how to get beyond Access like tools. Professionals who loose any job prospects when they get caught hacking or supporting criminal behavior. This last item is why Microsoft is the last place professional coders want to work.

On the other hand. Somebody is going to fix that company. If your intention is to do so, God bless you.
