We are still the Home of the Brave as evidenced by our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, but Land of the Free? No way. With a little research, you will find that the ultra-right wing conservatives had been trying to restrict our freedoms for some time prior to 9/11. 9/11 was used as an excuse to ram through the Total Information Awareness Act, which would gather all info on all Americans. They just renamed it the Patriot Act to make it sound better, sort of like the Clean Air Act that allows companies to put out more pollution but sounds awfully nice. What scares me, is that if you eliminate the atrocities that were perpetrated against the Jews, this is starting to look an awful lot like the early years of Hitler's reign. He came to power through questionable means, created a common enemy (the Jews who were scapegoated), gave more power to religious organizations, restricted peoples rights, created a Department of the Homeland, created a special police organization (the SS) to investigate citizens who were a "threat" to the safety of the ruling party (we have the NSA), told citizens to report other citizens who appeared to be non-patriots, employed torture, and marched into another country based upon lies. Add to this Big Business that is buying our "representatives" while simultaneously offshoring our jobs, and you have a pretty bleak future for those of us Americans who are not rich, politicians, or big executives (I guess that would make you rich, too). I am a life-long Republican, and I am amazed and ashamed by what has happened to my party. I feel that our country has been hijacked by Neocons and religious fanatics who would go to any lengths to achieve their goals, even turn this country into a third-world style police state. My belief is that the policing of the citizenry is necessitated by the fact that Americans have a history of overthrowing oppression (I think the Brits learned that lesson pretty well), and the Bush Administration is afraid that we just might attempt that again as they remove more and more of our rights.
