I hope you pointed out that that's a minimum standard, and that many (perhaps most or even all by now) accept up to 16 pps just fine. If I cared enough, I could change it if it didn't.

Since I doubt that any of the manual switching equipment still exists, it's probably a moot point, but back when pulse was still common, you could walk into Radio Shack and buy a push button phone that generated tones or pulses, and the pps was switchable. If you had touch tone, you could switch it to real tones. If you didn't, you could switch it to pulse. And if your area did not support fast pulses, you could switch it to 10 pps.

The nice thing about it is that it "dialed" almost as fast as real touch tone, but you did not have to pay the phone company extra for touch tone service, yet you could still deal with bots that require a touch tone response, and those were in their infancy at the time. Or you could hold for the next available agent, as if that ever really happens.
