Marketing Power
Hi, Shadetree.

You said:

"And by and large, they do" (ignore it, that is).

You can't ignore something you've never been introduced to. The fact is, most people -- even those with years of experience in Windows -- have no exposure to Firefox, because it hasn't been marketed aggressively. (As we are discussing in another thread, marketing costs money, and money is in short supply in an all-volunteer project.) IE is at 90-95% (depending on whom you ask) because of the Microsoft juggernaut, operating by both legal and illegal means. (The illegal means having been dispensed with some years ago, after the dominance was acquired.) At this point, IE maintains its dominance by two means: ubiquity and ignorance. If you buy a computer with Windows on it already (as most people do) IE will come pre-installed, and you probably won't know any better than to just live with it. It's only the moderately tech-savvy that will try Firefox, because they'll have come across it. That could change with more clever marketing, but for now, that's the situation.

For what it's worth, I agree with you on one point: If things stay as they are, Firefox won't get beyond the level they're at now in terms of usage, at least not significantly.
