It would be hard to say that a full-page ad in the NY Times didn't qualify as high-profile advertising -- and I didn't.
What I said was Firefox needs "mass-market" advertising. They need to move beyond the subset of people who read the paper edition of the NY Times (and read the ads), to the people who browse the Web site. (Incidentally, the ad was two pages.) The point is, Firefox has mostly been relegated to tech reviews and word-of-mouth. They need to move beyond that, and I don't see how their current strategy will help. Microsoft didn't get people to switch to Windows 95 en masse solely by the tech press. Heck, they even enlisted the Rolling Stones to push their product!
