How can they afford "better marketing people"?
One day, a dispirited group of people who had watched the collapse of Netscape decided to cheer themselves up by putting on a show... uhm... writing a browser.

They felt guilty because Netscape had decided to rely on them to save the company by using cheap labor to create improvements. But the volunteers discovered that the Netscape code couldn't be fixed, let alone improved. So they had worked desperately to create a new engine (Gecko) and get it ready before the people relying upon them had to suffer failure.

They were too late.

And so they decided to continue work on the new browser. But Netscape was sold and the purchasers at Time Warner saw no value in a free browser. Only Nokia and a few other companies were able to rescue them from miserable failure, and then only if the Mozilla-ites agreed to create a device browser that would throw people out of work.

The money is coming in now. They have a number of permanent staff members. They appreciate the techies who have used FireFox whether bored or anti-Microsoft.

But I expect they will never forget their early experiences. Knowing always that failure hovers over them, they will not invest in a future that can drain away quickly.

So their efforts to promote FireFox will be as limited and cheap and restricted to supporters as possible. Because if you do not try you cannot fail.

[Some exaggeration has been included in the above. Enjoy.]
