With all the cute carping
We actually miss the important point of the story, i.e. search is now No. 2 web activity. That may well be the watershed that shifts the web (and computing in general) to an applications based interface since searching will, in the end, need to be parsed into usable information and the applications for that purpose could well be the web future.

That is certainly one of the key goals of the Google strategy and Microsoft may well be searching for a way to make the OS continue to have central focus by having it merge with that function. Many other folks are going to want to play in this space, particularly the database folks. There is room for some real innovation here and it is almost certainly on the way.
