- These Photo Services are BAD!!!
-
Everyone and their grandmother is now selling these online photo and file management services. So what?!? Yahoo, Friendster, Shutterfly, Pikasa, Ofot, etc. I HATE THESE SERVICES, no matter how many cool features they offer...I'll tell you why...
My step-father subscribed to Ofoto when he got his camera and three months later Kodak sends them an email saying that they would be cleaning off his images from their server. His images are gone, and the site goes down, and he is stuck with half his photos on his PC and others now gone from the web servers he used to use to manage versions of them. Why use these services, if you dont have control???
My REAL problem with all these photo services and member portals like Google and Yahoo is you now are completely dependent on these services when it comes to your media. You also now have 20 passwords to remember, 20 sites to keep track of and link to, files scattered all over the internet, then your files are "held hostage" on some other companies servers, and you are now completely dependent on these people in terms of how you manage your files. What happens when they decide to charge for teh service...or chnage the application, etc?
There has got to be a better way? I mean are we going to end up storing all our personal files inside some companies application that could be deleted or changed at a hearts beat?
I have a better idea....everyone needs to buy and own their OWN WEBSITE! Simply go buy a domain with your name and host your own files there. You can easily upload photos and add them into html files using a text editor like notepad. HTML is easy. Or you can download free photo management software or web files and drop them on your own web site and manage your own files for free indefinately! Your family can easily link to your site and its ALWAYS available and free!
You never have to worry about applications changing, advertisers, and you control your files and domain and what your family and friends see. You can easily FTP photos up and down from your server, and YOU control what photos others see and share.
Forget these vendors...its not worth the trouble. I want control over my own files and dont feel I should have AOL or Google or Yahoo to do that. Its just a ploy on their end anyway to get traffic and a userbase. All they want from you is a market they can control, eventually bill, and sell to their advertisers.
