A bit of a misnomer
In the last paragraph the article says the patent discusses an applet embedded inside a web browser page. From what I've read, this was not the case in the patent. Eolas developed their applet technology before the browser, even. I believe their original concept was of a network-enabled applet running inside of another application (ie. GUI app.). The descriptions I've read about the patent suggest they were using tags to enable the applet technology. They had their concept up and running in the early 90s (around '91 I think).

Not saying this invalidates their patent claim, but just that I don't think they would've mentioned a browser since I don't think it had been invented yet.
