I agree that smart artists should take control of their careers.
But there's more to it than that. The RIAA has a stranglehold on
most mainstream avenues for exposure. Tell me how many of
the artists you know who put out music on their own labels are
able to get their songs played on MTV or on ClearChannel owned
radio stations? The killing of internet radio and attempts to shut
down p2p networks are obvious attempts by the RIAA to
maintain that tight grip on the market, giving them complete
control over which artists reach the mainstream and which don't.

I think a good living can be made while avoiding the RIAA
altogether. But there's a certain limit to how big you can get
without signing your soul away to them.
