Just a barganing tactic
Google just did this as a barganing tactic. The other company is only trying to get the most money they can from selling the trademark to google. They think that Google must pay them whatever they ask for. Google is demonstrating that they CAN do without the gmail name. So this other company will be face with the reality that they must either ask for a reasonable price or end up with nothing but the gmail name (which they dont really want anyway).
They will lower the price and google will buy it.
