About the only open source engines would be the small-block Chevy V8s and the Volkswagen air-cooled flat four. Pretty much all parts up to and including the block and heads may be bought as OEM or aftermarket.

As for Linux-chauvinism, it is stupid regardless of the venue. STB or car, refrigerator, or lawn mower, they all have microprocessors running a kernel, and all that matters is that they do their job and don't crash.
