Is it ZDnet subpar reporting, or bad math by MS & Yahoo?
From the prior story on Google talk: "AOL leads the pack in instant messaging, with about 41.6 million users, followed by about 19 million using Yahoo Messenger and 14 million using MSN Messenger, according to ComScore Media Metrix."

I've seen slightly higher numbers in the past, showing 50+ million for AIM, and between 20-30 million each for Yahoo and MSN messengers.

Yet this story states "Yahoo and Microsoft said the combined customer base for their two programs is around 275 million".

So is the problem that ZDnet reported a bad number, is it bad math by Yahoo and Microsoft, or was a different method of counting users implemented for this story which either counts users more than once or counts inactive accounts?
